{"id":741,"date":"2009-06-03T23:14:34","date_gmt":"2009-06-03T22:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=741"},"modified":"2009-06-04T07:33:49","modified_gmt":"2009-06-04T06:33:49","slug":"sometimes-it-needs-stating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=741","title":{"rendered":"Sometimes it needs stating . . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a bit of noise on Twitter both during media140 and after it on the extent of &#8216;obvious stating&#8217; going on at the event.\u00a0 Much of this comment was of a critical nature &#8211; &#8216;they don&#8217;t get it&#8217;; referring to the somewhat Twitter-sceptical journalists in the room.\u00a0 The bigger players there (Sky and the BBC) indulged in a bit of un-necessary and rather tedious sparring.\u00a0 Both of them, I suppose, feeling secure in their knowledge that their respective &#8216;market&#8217; power and &#8216;broadcast&#8217; mode will leave them largely unchanged by the openess and pervasiveness of social media generally and Twitter in particular. Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>Following media140, I&#8217;ve been reading blogs and the press coverage &#8211; reportage mostly; who said what and with little commentary or analysis about what it all means.\u00a0 Perhaps it&#8217;s too scary for the Potential Legacy Media (currently known as MSM) to think about?\u00a0 And sometimes that means the obvious needs a bit of stating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-753 aligncenter\" title=\"media140\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/media140.png?resize=474%2C215\" alt=\"Wordle based on media140 liveblog\" width=\"474\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/media140.png?resize=1024%2C463 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/media140.png?resize=300%2C135 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/media140.png?w=1406 1406w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/media140.png?w=948 948w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As part of the &#8216;post match&#8217; coverage there was an interesting if largely self-referential segment on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/pqnTT\">pods and blogs<\/a> on R5Live with journalists and a thoughtful comment from Mark Jones of Reuters who also provided some excellent comment and analysis on his <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SH6lb\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Realtime coverage<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I used Audioboo and Scribblelive at the event.\u00a0 I also generated the wordle above based on my liveblog.\u00a0 You can find the liveblog <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/xeRF9\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and &#8216;hat tips&#8217; to contributors <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/r6VTt\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those of you who liveblog events will know the level of concentration it needs.\u00a0 Using Scribblelive actually <em>increases<\/em> the level of complexity as you try to bring in other people&#8217;s tweets, try to avoid too much duplication (most sole tweeters at events do so in realtime and there&#8217;s often duplication in the aggregated stream).\u00a0 Trying to join in, provide some realtime feedback and combine inputs is &#8216;not for the faint-hearted&#8217; as the Scribblelive people say!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the next sections, I provide some thoughts on media140 after reflecting on the issues, the coverage and my own liveblog and Audioboos made at the time; I name the presenters in the Audioboos and you can also refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ub49t\" target=\"_blank\">Agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">The 140 Character story<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This panel kept bouncing off the argument &#8211; they had a silly discussion about whether Twitter was journalism or not.\u00a0 And we kind of forgot the &#8216;realtime news&#8217; tagline of the entire event.\u00a0 What was missing for me was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What the aggregation of information carried across Twitter enables (the analogy from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/16qvTY\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Thompson<\/a> of the Twitter\u00a0 &#8216;seismograph&#8217; is insightful);<\/li>\n<li>The speed at which news can propagate through memes and hashtags and the level of self-organisation enabled by this form of cooperative production (Retweets, comments, links to blog posts, realtime and near realtime video streams and websites); the news process and the potential impacts on the way news is made and perceived.\u00a0 I wonder what happens to the &#8216;news cycle&#8217; in a General Election when many of us have access to realtime video production on our mobile phones or can report events directly as they happen over Twitter?\u00a0 We&#8217;ll find out soon!<\/p>\n<p>The panel focused on the risks. \u00a0 An example of the risks seems to have been happening while the event was on, but I&#8217;m not sure anyone realised it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-757\" title=\"twitterspam\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/twitterspam.png?resize=321%2C128\" alt=\"twitterspam\" width=\"321\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/twitterspam.png?w=401 401w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/twitterspam.png?resize=300%2C119 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/> Skynews.com used Coveritlive to add a Tweetstream to their <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/jeZo4\" target=\"_blank\">site<\/a>.\u00a0 There seems to have been no filtering so there was lots of spam.\u00a0 And seemingly little editorial control over the Tweets.\u00a0 Just what risks Sky may have been running can be imagined; the links to &#8216;goldencasinoflash&#8217; could have been links to anything.\u00a0 Anything at all&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-764\" title=\"untibpc-spamt\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/untibpc-spamt.png?resize=391%2C84\" alt=\"untibpc-spamt\" width=\"391\" height=\"84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/untibpc-spamt.png?w=391 391w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/untibpc-spamt.png?resize=300%2C64 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>My Tweets were being carried live by Skynews also &#8211; even though I was effectively doing competing realtime coverage using a rival platform to Sky.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know to what extent there was active editorial control of the Tweetstream &#8211; the amount of spam they let through might suggest very little?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Frontline Journalism<\/h2>\n<p>One of the few times in the event when the room went really quiet and people listened really hard was when <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/hjmRx\" target=\"_blank\">Guy Degen<\/a>, freelance journalist and a member of the Frontline Club, played some audio and video footage from Tblisi.\u00a0 He was sent there on his own for Deutsche Welle; he had no gear and no time to get any, no crew and used a mobile phone to cover a riot. Frontline indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Anderson was insightful on the impact of social media on reporting on a roadtrip style assignment in the USA.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"400\" height=\"129\" data=\"http:\/\/boos.audioboo.fm\/swf\/fullsize_player.swf\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"scale\" value=\"noscale\" \/><param name=\"salign\" value=\"lt\" \/><param name=\"bgColor\" value=\"#FFFFFF\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"window\" \/><param name=\"FlashVars\" value=\"playerWidth=400&amp;mp3Title=Frontline+Journalism&amp;mp3Time=06.36pm+20+May+2009&amp;mp3=http%3A%2F%2Faudioboo.fm%2Fboos%2F22508-frontline-journalism.mp3&amp;mp3LinkURL=http%3A%2F%2Faudioboo.fm%2Fboos%2F22508-frontline-journalism&amp;size=full&amp;mp3Author=brian_condon\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/boos.audioboo.fm\/swf\/fullsize_player.swf\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<h2>Local and human<\/h2>\n<h3>Local news = newspapers? #fail<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/TkZdY\" target=\"_blank\">Joanne Jacobs<\/a> ably chaired the final panel session and brought the whole event back pretty much on time so <em>kudos<\/em> to her.\u00a0 It was an interesting and stimulating panel &#8211; and you can pick up some of the flavour of the discussion from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/15FQJ4\">pp 6-8 of the liveblog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given what&#8217;s happening in local and regional news, the discussion after the short presentations seemed to spiral into being about newspapers.\u00a0 But surely local news is going to be much more than papers &#8211; but I can see there&#8217;s a painful transition to go through for a lot of people.\u00a0 Some of the more &#8216;gung ho&#8217; social mediarati might like to think about that.<\/p>\n<h3>No-one mentioned the &#8216;backchannel&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>The <em>backchannel<\/em> (what happens in the social media space during an event or presentation) didn&#8217;t get a mention.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example from media140:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_796\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-796\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-796\" title=\"backchannel\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/backchannel.png?resize=474%2C334\" alt=\"Use the backchannel!\" width=\"474\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/backchannel.png?w=745 745w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/digital-citizen.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/backchannel.png?resize=300%2C211 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Use the backchannel!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I first came across the backchannel in tech conferences in the USA about 5 years ago &#8211; using chat room software over local wireless networks and, in some instances allowing external participants &#8216;listening-in&#8217; to audio streams to interact with the chat.\u00a0 All these messages were projected on a screen behind the speaker so it was generally impossible both to present to the audience and watch the backchannel at the same time.\u00a0 The backchannel often had more stimulating and interesting stuff on it than was happening on the panel.\u00a0 And dangerous sometimes for both speaker and audience.\u00a0 I remember taking my PowerBook onto the stage and using it in a panel session both to contribute to the backchannel and comment on what other panelists were saying.\u00a0 Apparently, this was unusual at the time.\u00a0 The audience reaction was interesting!<\/p>\n<p>So it seems to me that the Potential Legacy Media faces the same risks as a pompous or tedious speaker in perpetual broadcast mode with an active backchannel.\u00a0 Like a politician giving the answer to a question the interviewer didn&#8217;t ask, the risks of audience alienation are high.\u00a0 And when the real backchannel turns against you, as it has for our MPs recently, life can get very unpleasant.<\/p>\n<h3>Being Human and Connecting<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/svW5l\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Pulver<\/a> over a quite good Skype video link finished off on an optimistic note.\u00a0 We can move from a position where the one-way broadcast mode can become much more interactive.\u00a0 It has to be more than &#8216;promotion&#8217;;
